STATEWIDE – NyKeshia Smith has been convicted of multiple credit card fraud and identity theft incidents.
Smith is a former grocery store employee who was accused of defrauding multiple customers by obtaining information from their credit cards during transactions and using the stolen information while shopping. Two of the three victims are seniors.
Smith fraudulently fined a victim’s credit and debit cards with nearly $ 3,000, including more than $ 1,000 spent at Sam’s Club and more than $ 1,000, according to a press release from the Attorney General’s Office cover another. In one case, a high-ranking victim left a debit card in the card reader after a transaction, and Smith then stole the card.
“I hope this scammer enjoyed her victim-funded shopping spree because she will pay heavily for it in state prison,” said Attorney General Ashley Moody.
The Casselberry Police Department and the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation.
Smith faces more than 10 years in state prison. The sentencing is scheduled for July 12th.
The jury found Smith guilty on nine counts; a count of fraudulent use of personal identification information for someone over the age of 60, a second degree crime; Theft from a person 65 years of age or older, more than $ 300 less than $ 10,000, a third degree crime; a charge of unlawful removal of a lost or misplaced credit card, first degree misdemeanor; three cases of fraudulent use of personal identification data, each a third-degree crime; a case of theft, a third degree crime; a count of fraudulent use of personal identification information for someone over the age of 60, a second degree crime; and one case of $ 750 theft, a third degree crime.
The Honorable Marlene Alva, District Judge for the 18th District of Florida, presided over the trial. Assistant Attorneys Mitchell Cooper and Michael Filteau are pursuing the case.
