CP warns staff not to use PoS and ATMs to blackmail residents –
Edo State Police Command staff have been warned against unethical practices and behavior, particularly the use of outlets and ATMs to blackmail residents and members of the public.
Police Commissioner Abutu Yaro issued the alert on Friday through the new command’s spokesman, Chidi Nwabuzor.
Nwabuzor contacted the journalists of former police PR officer SP Kontongs Bello soon after taking office and said the CP had ordered him to brief journalists on developments in the command.
According to him, Yaro made a number of changes in the command’s offices and assigned officers to the various offices he created.
He said: “With that, the state is moving again to ensure that the state is peaceful for everyone.
“CP Abutu Yaro has issued a policy statement resulting from the changes and transfers of officers and men he has made to date.
“He has warned officers and men of command to behave and avoid unethical practices and behavior, particularly the use of PoS and ATMs to blackmail residents and members of the public.
“He also warned the officers and men of command to refrain from naked brutality and public dehumanization of residents.”
Nwabuzor also said that the CP warned the command staff to refrain from any action that could lead to land grabs.
He said staff were advised to be aware of their job and practice it professionally.
Yaro also warned of criminal money extortion on the highways by command staff.
Meanwhile, Nwabuzor, who had been a PPRO in command between 2017 and 2021, said the spokesperson change was made by Inspector General of Police Usman Baba at the request of the Edo State CP.
However, he assured that whatever was expected of the PPRO would be delivered.
He said: “I will always stand by the truth.
“I will stand by the police and the public and report incidents as they arise.”
He asked both the press and the public for cooperation to enable him to succeed.
He announced that the former PPRO had been transferred to Police Command’s New Etete Division as a Divisional Police Officer.
