Kobo has its subscription e-book library service called. started Kobo Plus in Australia. Interestingly, Kobo does not have to officially announce the launch of the service just yet, although this is already reflected on the company’s official Australian website. Australia joins a very exclusive list of nations – Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands – where the Kobo Plus service is currently available.

Kobo is also offering a free trial to help users decide if they should actually go for it. As stated on the Kobo Plus page, the subscription costs $ 13.99 each month plus applicable taxes. This is a bang in the price bracket that Kindle Unlimited operates in and is understandable when you consider that Kobo Plus would effectively compete with Amazon’s e-book subscription service for libraries.

The free trial version of Kobo Plus can now be started using the Kobo eReader, kobo.com or the Kobo Android app. Oddly enough, this isn’t available in the Kobo iOS app. In addition, the trial offer only applies to the Kobo Plus eBook intended for this purpose. Those who don’t have a valid Kobo account will need to enter their credit card and other billing information. Kobo only charges subscription fees for those users who choose to continue using the service.

Kobo said the Kobo Plus eBooks can also be read offline, with a fixed allocation of 15 Kobo Plus eBooks that can be read on a Kobo eReader or through Kobo.com. Users have 30 days to read the 15 e-books. This will be a boon for those who don’t connect to WiFi often or when traveling. As soon as the 15 e-books have been opened or the 30-day period has expired, users have to go online and sync their e-reader or app, which extends the period to another 30 days.

Kobo said there are hundreds and thousands of e-books under Kobo Plus, although not all Kobo books are under the subscription plan. More books are being added all the time.
