Make Christmas dreams come true

September 25 – Every year, the Salvation Army provides Christmas relief to families in need in hundreds of cities across the United States through the Angel Tree Program. The program offers generous donors, families, and businesses the opportunity to purchase and personalize a gift for children in need.

Angel trees are usually set up in shopping centers and malls. In addition, companies with Angels can use Angels to decorate a Christmas tree at their place of business for employees to adopt. After choosing an angel and buying gifts, the items will be returned to the Salvation Army’s angel tree location to be distributed in time for Christmas.

To practice the current safety precautions, registration of Angel Tree will be available from October 4th to October 21st through telephone interviews. Families who live in Navarro County are eligible to apply for the program.

For registration, applicants must submit the following documents:

– Some form of identification – driver’s license or passport

—Proof of income within the last 30 days

—An electricity bill

—Birth certificates for children up to 12 years

– Allocation letters for government support (food stamps, TANF, Medicaid)

Only one parent or legal guardian may register a child – proof of guardianship must be provided. Applicants must have the child’s preferences and clothing sizes prepared at the time of the interview, and interviews are available in English and Spanish. Upon completion of registration, applicants will receive further instructions on how to obtain their proof of program registration.

Together with the Red Kettle Campaign, the angel tree is one of the Salvation Army’s most famous Christmas campaigns. The Angel Tree was founded in Lynchburg, VA in 1979 when Majors Charles and Shirley White ran the program at a local mall to provide clothes and toys for children for the Christmas season.

The name was given because the whites identified the wishes of the local children by writing their gift wishes on Hallmark greeting cards with pictures of angels. They placed the cards on a Christmas tree in the mall so shoppers could choose children to help them. Thanks to the Whites, who were then assigned to Lynchburg, VA, by the Salvation Army, more than 700 children experienced a happier Christmas in their first year.

Today the Angel Tree is one of the Salvation Army’s best supported programs, enabling millions of children to open gifts on Christmas morning.
