One of Buda’s most popular farmers’ markets goes digital
Czakó Farmer’s Market and Mastercard are collaborating to allow customers to pay electronically at all stalls, whether by instant bank transfer, QR code, mobile phone or traditional credit card, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.
The vast majority of providers here have already provided buyers with one of these solutions.
“We have also launched our infrastructure development program, Doppio, to replace the legacy, robust POS terminals with solutions that retailers can integrate well into their day-to-day operations. A number of mPOS devices are available today, but thanks to the phone terminal solution, even an Android smartphone or tablet can be enabled to accept card payments,” said Ferenc Szász, director of business development at Mastercard.
“We believe that the variety of available solutions can further accelerate the penetration of digital payments, as affected entrepreneurs can choose from a variety of solutions and experience the development not as a constraint but as an opportunity,” he added.
To use the phone terminal, traders need to download an app on their mobile phone and in minutes the device will be ready to accept digital payments. Customers can simply touch the merchant’s smartphone with their card, mobile phone or other payment device.
“I was among the first to download this application and go live,” said Miklós Csáki, Head of Csakis Alma Manufaktúra. “A frequent question I get is whether it is possible to pay by card. If the answer is yes, the customer’s eyes begin to search the counter for a device to touch their credit card, watch, or phone. My phone is the terminal! – I’ll show them and hold the device in my hand.”
“The Czakó Farmer’s Market is organized weekly,” notes Luca Várady, the market manager. “In the traditional sense of the market, complemented by modern products, different producers come to the oldest wine cellars in Tabán every Saturday and Sunday. Not only we, but also our producers take care of conscious, sustainable nutrition, so jars and egg cartons are taken back by our producers and our new Czakó Market canvas bags are in production. Since we have new producers every week, it is not to be expected that the customer always brings as much cash as he needs. Our producers have noticed this too. If they always come up with such coveted products, the only way they can help their customers is to install a card reader terminal.
Most traders say it’s also a big help that they don’t have to deal with large bills and change, and that the queue moves faster, which is always a critical issue on Saturday and Sunday mornings. In the market, 90% of sellers accept some form of electronic payment, and the goal is to eventually make all purchases cash-free, according to a press release sent to the Budapest Business Journal.
