CHENNAI: The number of people paying electricity bills online increased by 8.54 percent in June compared to previous months, although only 30 percent of all TANGEDCO consumers pay their bills online.

Of the nearly three million electricity consumers across Tamil Nadu, 91.44.267 paid their bills online in February and March. This rose to 99.25.520 in June.

We have posted online payment method boards in all direct collection centers. The staff will also clear consumers’ doubts about online payments,” an official said.

Another official said that as even residents of urban areas are reluctant to go online, the utility has launched an awareness campaign. TANGEDCO also plans to expand bill collection to other parts of the state via point-of-sale (POS) machines now available in Chennai, the official said.
