Monterey Grand Prix Indycar results at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

Today the NTT Indycar Series kicks off in Monterey, California for the penultimate race of the 2021 season. Laguna Seca is a 2,238 mile long course with a 300-foot vertical drop.

Colton Herta and Alexander Rossi lead the field at the start. Next up are 95 laps of open wheel races.

Laguna Seca
Race report

Green, Rossi is turning one. He jumps outwards and snaps forward, but Herta clears him with the preferred one in the groove from the corner.

Felix Rosenqvist turns behind them, don’t be careful.

Lap 2, Herta drops a bike and Rossi looks inside. Rossi runs far out of the corner and slams Herta wheels. Rossi turns off the track and stops the machine. The caution is off.

Green, Herta leads Power into the first lap.

Round 10, Will Power Boxing from 2nd place. This is an early stop as the crew start working on the engine.

Lap 16, Rosenqvist turns down the corkscrew, no caution.

Pit stops

Lap 19, Herta pits from the front of the race.

One lap later, Grosjean and Ed Jones pits. Herta drives back to the top of the race. Palou rushes back 2 seconds.

Lap 25, Pato O’Ward dives into 3rd place in Newgarden. It drives Newgarden wide and Newgarden loses a lot of jobs as the train goes by.

Lap 26, Palou battles with Rossi’s lap car. Graham Rahal dives in just before the corkscrew and takes away the second one.

Lap 36, Palou is 5 seconds behind Herta. Palou runs the entire route on the worn, soft red tires.

Takuma Sato turns through the corkscrew. Scott Dixon is getting nowhere on the scene and Sato thrusts right into him. Both drivers continue, but with damage.

Pit stops

Round 40, Palou boxes from 2nd place. He chooses black tires for the header.

Lap 43, Herta pits from the front. Herta cycles back 2.5 seconds ahead.

Lap 50, Herta leads Palou by 1 second.

Lap 60, Herta works in heavy lap traffic. However, Palou is struggling with the same traffic. In between there is a round car.

Lap 66, Herta clears the traffic and opens the gap to 4 seconds.

Pit stops

On lap 67, Palou drives into the pit lane for his last stop.

Lap 69, Herta box from the front of the race. He pulls out 2 seconds before Palou.

Lap 72, Herta has a run on Grosjean. He drives right past with fresher tires to take the lead again.

With 20 to go, Herta Palou leads by 6 seconds.

14 to go, Herta beats a rabbit! Slight wing damage for the leader. Grosjean quickly joins Rahal in the battle for 3rd place.

At 12 noon, Grosjean dives into Rahal on lap one. He came back from four car lengths to complete that pass while braking. He is 10 seconds behind Palou.

7 to go Grosjean drives deep into the corkscrew of Jimmie Johnson’s lap car. Johnson was told on the radio to make it difficult for Grosjean. Instead, Grosjean jumps over the curb and drives two wheels into Johnson’s side and Grosjean is clear.

4 to go, Grosjean cuts through the lap cars. He has reduced the gap to Palou to just 3 seconds. However, the damage slowed Grosjean’s pace.
