Rogers outage paralyzes Canadian banks’ ATMs, POS and internet banking

Interac, a Canadian e-transfer service, is currently down due to issues with network provider Rogers.

Interac provides transaction services for payments exchanged between financial institutions and businesses. The service is used by several Canadian banks including Desjardins, Tangerine, National Bank and HSBC Bank Canada.

The enterprise tweeted, “There is a nationwide outage by Rogers that includes all business and consumer network services. This affects INTERAC Debit and INTERAC eTransfer. INTERAC Debit is currently online and not available at checkout.”

Down Detector Canada currently shows an increasing number of bank failures reported by CIBC, RBC, Scotiabnk, TD Bank and BMO. The network problems come from the mobile phone and internet provider Rogers. Have Rogers users in Toronto over 15,000 complaints filedwith more from Montreal, Ottawa, Brampton and more areas across the country.

The outage is affecting Interac’s electronic funds transfers and machines nationwide, as well as ATMs and cell phones.

Authorities are currently trying to resolve the issue, although the timeline is uncertain.

Last year, Interac worked with Walmart Canada to add Interac debit payment options for shoppers.
